A plain-English primer on renting with Housing Benefit or Universal Credit
“DSS” is a leftover term from the old Department of Social Security (renamed the DWP in 2001). In practice it now means any rental where the tenant's rent is paid in full or in part by Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit. The label has stuck because everyone knows it — it's still the shorthand landlords and renters use day-to-day.
We summarise how the system works so you know what to expect. For your specific eligibility, current LHA rates, and an official calculation, use gov.uk/universal-credit or speak to Citizens Advice.
